SUMMARY:Upper Limb Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: Reflections on Research & Interventions
DESCRIPTION:November 4\, 2025\n8:00AM – 4:00PM \nNorth Campus Research Complex\, Ann Arbor\, MI \n \n  \nHand injuries ranging from localized fatigue to chronic muscle\, tendon\, and nerve injuries are a major cause of pain\, impaired hand function\, and result in varying degrees of disability. Studies of hand injuries\, personal\, social\, and work factors over the last 50 years have contributed to improvements in the design of work equipment\, evaluation methods\, and understanding of how injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome are managed. This 1.5 day program brings together leading investigators from various specialties to reflect on this research\, the lessons learned\, and how these data can help us manage hand injuries and reduce disability. In the morning\, each speaker will present a brief overview of theirs and others’ research that provides insights for preventing and managing injuries associated with hand work.  In the afternoon\, speakers will participate in a panel discussion focusing on how the available research informs recommendations for managing hand injuries. \nFeaturing \n\nMultidisciplinary speakers\nPanel discussion\nPoster session\n\nSummary of Topics \n\nEpidemiology/etiology\nJob/task analysis\nRehabilitation\nBiomechanics\nControl/management\nPsycho/Social factors\n\n  \nSpeakers* \n\nFrancesco Violante – University of Bologna \nDavid Rempel – University of California San Francisco \nRob Radwin  – University of Wisconsin\nLaura Punnett  – University of Massachusetts Lowell \nBernard Martin – University of Michigan \nSheryl Ulin – University of Michigan \nRobert Fox – University of Michigan\, General Motors \nLeia Stirling – University of Michigan \nWilliam Marras – Ohio State University\nMartin Cherniak – University of Connecticut\n\n*subject to change \n  \nPoster Presentations \nPosters showcasing University of Michigan graduate student research will be available. \n  \nHotel Accommodations \n\nStay at the Doubletree by Hilton\, Ann Arbor North \n\n3600 Plymouth Rd\,\nAnn Arbor\, MI 48105\n(734) 769-9800\n\nTo receive special pricing for this event\, click on the following link to book your room:\nhttps://www.hilton.com/en/attend-my-event/ergonomicssymposiumnovember2025/ \n  \nRegistration \nRegistration Fee: $20.00 (plus Eventbrite registration fees)\nStudent scholarships are available.\n\nAdvanced registration is required and will be accepted on a “first come-first served” basis.
