The 2024 Regional Education Research Center (ERC) Symposium was held on Friday April, 5th at the University of Illinois, Chicago. The 2024 theme “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of OSH” with guest speakers from NIOSH, US Steel, University of Cincinnati, UIC School of Public Health TWH, UIC Agricultural safety. AI Workshop collaborative and group presentations lead by Dr. Houshang Darabi, from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Computer Science professor at UIC & members from his lab. This event brought interdisciplinary and intercollegiate NIOSH trainees and faculty together for this yearly scheduled research symposium and poster session from the Education and Research Centers from the University of Cincinnati, University of Illinois Chicago, University of Kentucky, University of Minnesota, and the University of Michigan.
Honored to have Dr. John Howard, Director, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) provide this year’s virtual Symposium Kick-off Welcome.
Program Objectives (At the completion of the symposium, participants will be able to):
1. Explain what Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning are and
their differences. In addition, participants will be able to:
a. Describe parts of an Artificial Intelligence system
b. Classify different AI/OSH systems
c. Use AI terms and concepts appropriately when interacting with
non-OSH collaborators
2. Propose potential AI applications in OSH and the benefits,
challenges, and opportunities of these applications, including:
a. making decisions about when to use AI to solve an OSH
problem
b. recognizing their professional roles in AI/OSH projects
c. working in inter-disciplinary teams (IH, OS, OM) to solve
problems
3. Identify ethical issues related to AI systems.
