Advancing Policy Solutions for Cumulative Environmental Health Risks & Impacts (CR&I): Developing a methodology for conducting cumulative risk assessments under Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) that incorporate non-chemical stressors, identifying CR&I regulatory gaps, and evaluating how CR&I can be addressed under existing regulatory frameworks at national and state levels.

Children’s Environmental Health Research: Applying systems sciences and community-based system dynamics to uncover structural drivers of cumulative neurotoxic chemical exposures affecting children’s brain development. Current work includes collaboration with community-based organizations in Cleveland and the national consortium Project TENDR.

The RESPIRAR Project: NIEHS, transdisciplinary team investigating the mechanisms through which institutional policies, regulatory responses and practices, both historic and contemporary, shape respiratory health trends among migrant seasonal farmworkers. The project aims to inform the design of policies and best practices for optimizing the living and working conditions and better health protections among these workers.

Research/Professional Interests: Long-term research goals are organized around three primary areas of interest: (1) to investigate environmental risk factors of aging-related diseases, especially metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases; (2) to elucidate the mechanisms of aging-related diseases linked to environmental risk factors using biomarkers and metabolomic profiles; and (3) to identify susceptible populations at increased risks due to environmental exposures for more effective disease prevention and intervention. His overarching mission is to leverage this knowledge for more effective disease prevention and intervention strategies.

Research/Professional Interests: Environmental exposures during critical life stages, including pregnancy, early development, puberty, and menopause, can impact long-term maternal and child health. Her work includes both identification of important sources of exposure to phthalates, phenols, flame retardants, pesticides, and other contaminants, and determination of subsequent exposure-related health effects within vulnerable populations. She is particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms by which environmental exposures – both chemical and non-chemical – interact to affect growth, neurodevelopment, and aging. Dr. Watkins is currently pursuing this research in the context of large, NIEHS-funded birth cohort studies in Mexico City and Puerto Rico.

With a specialized emphasis on dementia caregiving, Dr. Johnson investigates the unique challenges faced by Black caregivers, highlighting the mental health toll and systemic barriers they encounter. Her work illuminates the mental health disparities within this population, advocating for culturally responsive interventions. She actively examines health disparities, especially the impact of social determinants on care access and outcomes.
